Konojel is making changes.
Our new site is coming soon. For now, get to know us a little better below!
Thanks for visiting our temporary website.
Konojel's mission is to improve the standard of living of the inhabitants of San Marcos la Laguna, investing in programs that generate positive changes in the future.
We are strengthening children, women and youth in the community through programs targeting nutrition, education, and empowerment.
Konojel is registered as a non-profit organization in Guatemala and is located in San Marcos La Laguna on Lake Atitlan. All donations are fully tax-deductible in the U.S. through the All Together Foundation (EIN 47-2522190), a 501(c)(3) charity formed in 2014 with the exclusive purpose of supporting the Konojel Community Center and its projects.
Why We Help
Forty percent of the indigenous people of San Marcos are living on less than $2 per day, per household. Poverty permeates every aspect of their lives, including their physical stature and their nutritional, physical, and dental health. Impacts include high rates of unwanted pregnancy, lack of education beyond eighth grade, reduced opportunity for adequate employment, and more.
We’re busy working on…
-
The Healthy Babies Program
Proper nutrition and care during the first 1,000 days of life ensure the full development of the capabilities and aptitudes of children. The first 1000 days are for life!
We accompany pregnant women in the community through their babies' first 1,000 days. By providing training workshops, cooking classes with nutritionally balanced recipes, support groups, home visits, and weight and height monitoring, we preventively impact the rate of chronic child malnutrition in the community.
-
The Young Leaders Program
We believe that citizenship and, above all, young leaders are key to promoting changes in social structures.
We support the high school education of San Marcos students by providing scholarships and getting them actively involved in developing a positive life plan. Without our scholarships, most of these students would not be able to continue their education beyond eighth grade. Our goal is to develop a foundation for positive change in the community that includes both men and women as key elements. This change is based in education with an emphasis on values while respecting the diversity, history and perspectives of the local Kaqchikel culture.
It is our hope that this group of young leaders in the community will become the inspiration and foundation for future generations of other young leaders.

The Computer Lab
We provide internet access and computer training to indigenous students who otherwise would not be able to do their homework assignments. The computer lab is also available to indigenous adults. Since we moved the lab into our own building, we have also been hosting classes for the public school.

The Konojel Restaurant
Having been recognized as the Traveler's Choice by Trip Advisor in 2021, Restaurante Konojel offers a variety of traditional Guatemalan recipes in vegan versions. 100% of the profits raised by the restaurant go to fund our programs in the community. When you visit San Marcos, come and try our delicious dishes at affordable prices. As our recommendation in Lonely Planet mentions, doing good rarely tastes so delicious!
